2:45 am - New Disguises
The minions are outfitted with their new adventurer disguises.

Ruby masquerades as a bard, part entertainer and part public relations specialist. She doesn't know how to play stringed instruments and probably doesn't sing too well, but she's well versed in lying and deception so she should master the propaganda component just fine. As the mouthpiece for both Sarna and the Overlord through her telepathic amulet, Ruby will be able to manipulate the public exactly as her two masters command - if they can ever agree on anything.

Gavin is ironically garbed as a holy man, wearing the robes and carrying the tome of the priesthood of Ida (Asha's goody-goody counterpart). It remains to be seen how convincingly he can pass himself for a righteous and noble priest of a fertility goddess, but at the very least he can conceal armor under the robe and be ready to help in a fight.

Runt lands the disguise closest to his actual profession: that of a knave. Knaves are thieves and bandits who "reform" and receive official pardons in exchange for informing on their former organizations. They're often hunted by their former associates for being turncoats, so they seek the protection of heroes who exploit them as scouts, trapspringers, and brute labor. Runt doesn't have a vengeful criminal organization on his heels, but he will still have to contend with the hazards of scouting and trapspringing without any formal training in those arts.

Now that they have agreed to this new mission and have been outfitted in appropriate disguises for the roles they will play, the minions are ready to meet up with Jack and begin cultivating his career as a hero...or drag him to meet his father, depending on which master wins their loyalty.

1:06 am - Gods and Related Statuary
Captain Sarna's estate boasts a lavish temple devoted to Asha, the obscure goddess the Baron mentioned before his untimely demise (for more info on Asha check out the encyclopedia). The Captain's offer of employment is almost as outlandish as the statuary that decorates the temple antechamber.

12:56 am - Conquering 101
Captain Sarna gives the minions a tour of her mysterious candlelit estate while talking military strategy. She doesn't think highly of the Overlord's brute force method of conquering and offers her own plan, one that the minions presumably factor into somehow.

3:33 am - Pay Day
The minions finally have something to show for all their hard work: two hundred drams, a very respectable sum of coin. The next step is surviving to spend it, and further employment under Captain Sarna might not be conducive to that.

1:05 am - Home Delivery (Undrowned or your minions are free).
The minions have washed up alive in Captain Sarna's private seawater jacuzzi, complete with tide-powered jets and exfoliating barnacle scrubs. Aside from the bath the Captain's intentions for them remain a mystery. Hopefully they'll get paid.

5:26 pm - New Features
I've added a few new features. Here's the details:

Cast: Mugshots of the major characters with brief descriptions. Minor or unnamed characters aren't listed because I'm lazy and they're very likely to die before becoming relevant.

Archive: Easy access to all the pages. You can also reach the archives by clicking the Overlord emblem on the navigation panel.

Encyclopedia: An exhaustive alphabetized list of people, places, and things directly or distantly related to the comic. I'll expand it later to include links to pages in which terms are featured and potentially add illustrations.

World: Sort of a brief primer on the comic's setting, with a map of the island and some details on its denizens. Most of this info is contained within the encyclopedia, but I figured I'd condense it for easy browsing.

Links: There actually aren't any links yet. I haven't gotten around to going through my bookmarks and pulling together an up-to-date list of my favorite comics, but when I do you'll find it there.

If you happen to find any spelling errors, broken links, or missing encyclopedia entries let me know and I'll fix 'em.

12:23 am - Brinemaidens
Brinemaidens, sometimes cynically referred to as "Boobfish," are deadly marine predators that dwell in temperate coastal waters. The origin of their human-like upper torso is debated: some insist it is a specialized adaptation to lure seafaring and shoreside men to rescue what might pass for a drowning woman in fog or darkness, while many sailors insist that Brinemaidens not only feast on men but also mate with them, depositing their infants ashore to be raised by lonely widows. When these mute dark-eyed girls reach puberty they return to the seashore, wandering listlessly on the beach until the transformation takes hold and they disappear with the tide. Researchers seeking the truth behind the ecology and life cycle of the Brinemaiden typically get an all-too-close exploration of their digestive tracts.

Freesailor pirates make use of Brinemaidens in their trials at sea. Petty criminals that are unwary or tire too quickly on the mile or so swim back to shore will often be overcome by Brinemaidens who would otherwise avoid armed men. Those accused of serious crimes are unarmed and bound, essentially serving as a free meal for the Brinemaidens and gory entertainment for the rest of the crew.

Brinemaidens, though widely feared by sailors, are also subjects of a sort of reverence as embodiments of the fickle and dangerous nature of the sea. In addition to the stories of shipwrecks becoming grisly banquets, there are also the occasional returns of sailors who crewed a ship wrecked far from shore, inexplicably alive and babbling incoherently of rescue at the claws of a maiden of the deep...

2:32 am - Blood in the Water
It would appear Ruby is finally out of tricks. It also seems that the Overlord needs new minions.

3:55 am - Hopeless
The goblin spy first introduced here makes an encore appearance. Apparently leaving the amulet with Captain Sarna wasn't altogether wise. Will the minions devise a daring plan to escape their predictament and avoid certain death beneath the merciless waves? Probably not...

7:29 am - Freesail Discipline
Freesailors have a simple set of laws. Don't cheat, steal from, injure, or kill crew of any vessel that flies the freesail flag. Penalty is a long and dangerous swim back to shore. And definitely don't cheat, steal from, injure, or kill a captain of a freesail ship. Penalty is trying to swim and defend yourself from the terrors of the deep with your hands bound.

What exactly are brinemaidens? Stay tuned to find out.

1:41 am - Doublecrossed
Trusting people who plunder and sink ships for a living probably isn't a good idea, especially if you already know it's not a good idea but do it anyway because you're greedy. Next week the minions discover the consequences of murdering an influential pirate lord.

1:16 am - Mr. Comic Genesis
Gavin has entered the annual beauty pageant at Comic Genesis, showing off his exotic swimsuit and formal panoply whilst gushing about how cute puppies are and how his one wish is world peace. Check him out below, and be sure to browse the other entries in the contest here.

1:01 pm - Impact
Contrary to the Baron's comment on page 56, it looks like Ruby really was lucky enough. With the lantern out of juice the minions are effectively trapped in the lighthouse until dawn, but the lighthouse happens to be filled with treasures and relics from the extensive travels of an infamous pirate lord. So they'll probably find plenty to amuse themselves.

Tune in next week when the minions are paid handsomely for a job well done and continue on their way with no complications.

10:25 pm - Look before you leap
Ah, the joy of free-fall. The wind howling past your ears. The thrilling sensation of weightlessness. Your poorly timed pounce replaying over and over in your mind as the ground rushes up to meet you...

Tune in next week for the predictable conclusion of the Baron's fall.

6:11 pm - A few changes
You'll probably notice some new stuff, including:
  1. No more elves. During revision and expansion of the comic's lore I chose to divest it entirely of elves, reflected in some minor changes throughout, chiefly concerning pointy ears. I have been assured the ear clipping was quick and painless.
  2. Website revisions. I played with the layout a little and I'm in the process of expanding some additional features, including the background lore of the world the comic is set in and an obsessive encyclopedic list of characters, names, places, etc.
  3. Author commentary here on this blog. I'll be using this as a forum for character sketches, background info, witty commentary, and any other surplus info or images related to the comic.
Additionally there's a new page:
